First Star Wars Spin-Off Titled 'Rogue One"

There's been a million rumors about Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and the furor will only continue to grow as we approach December, but now there's even more Star Wars to talk about.  The title and release date for the first spin-off film have officially been announced.

We already knew Gareth Edwards was in line to direct, but we now have confirmation that the film will be titled "Rogue One," will star Felicity Jones, will start shooting this summer at Pinewood Studios, and will be released in December 2016.

The plot or timeline of the film aren't known yet, but references to the Rogue Group are canonically restricted to the Original Trilogy, starting in The empire Strikes Back.  Whether the move will take place then and be a sort of interquel, or take place after Return of the Jedi is not yet certain, but it looks like those are the two best bets.

Since the title refers explicitly to "Rogue One," it will likely revolve around a Rebel pilot (or group of pilots), meaning  it could heavily feature some good milti-squadron dogfights, which there are usually no more than one of in each movie.

It has also been confirmed that Rian Johnson will write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII, which will be released on may 26th, 2017.  One day after the 40th anniversary of Star Wars: A New Hope (or, just Star Wars, for the purists).

It seems like Pinewood Studios may be the home to most of the production for the coming Star Wars films, which is exciting, because of the opportunities for them to create some synergy, re-use sets, and use budgets way more efficiently.

Meanwhile, we're still waiting for the second trailer for The Force Awakens.  More than likely, it will premier with Avengers: Age of Ultron in May.  Rumor has it we'll get our first look at the returning cast from the Original Trilogy in that trailer, so there's a lot to be excited about in May.

There's a lot of Star Wars to be excited about in general.
