Star Wars Episode VII Subtitle Revealed!

Star Wars: Episode VII has just recently finished principal photography, and now it also has an official subtitle: The Force Awakens.  There have been plenty of plot rumors since production started that might suggest exactly what this means for the plot of this movie, or it's place in the franchise, but with the absence of an official plot synopsis, and no official trailer, set photos, or anything but rumors, I'm not going to get in the weeds with that.

I do think the episode title arc tells a fairly reasonable story, though.  The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and now The Force Awakens.

The Prequel Trilogy is about the fall of the Jedi, the Original Trilogy chronicles starts with A New Hope and ends with Return of the Jedi, so that arc is fairly obvious.  Now, The Force Awakens is likely referring to the begging of the Jedi's return to prominence in the galaxy like we saw in the prequels.

Fan reception has been decidedly mixed, but it wouldn't be Star Wars if it wasn't hated upon by its own fans.  The title is definitely cheesy, but it fits right in with the cheese of the other 6 titles.  Somehow, people seemed to have forgotten that a title like The Empire Strikes Back sounds like it comes right out of the title for some sort of old school science fiction B movie.

Considering this is the biggest plot hint we've gotten since the first casting announcement, it's a bit early for fans to make decisions about the title.  Maybe the franchise has been around so long that people don't think about it this way anymore, but this is a franchise called "Star Wars."  Forget that you grew up with these moment for a moment. "Star Wars" is about as cheesy of a name as there is.  It looks pretty dumb for people to be like "I love Star Wars, but that whole 'The Force Awakens' part gives me pause!"

Again, though, this doesn't tell us a whole lot.  We still don't even have an official logo!  The most exciting part about this reveal is that it suggests we could be getting some set photos, or character photos, or a trailer any day now.  That's the real news people should be excited about.
