Obi-Wan Kenobi Spinoff Might Be in The Works

Star Wars is back, in a big way.  With all the old Expanded Universe material now in a secondary "Star Wars: Legends" universe, Lucasfilm is launching a large scale franchise universe.  Although the final season of The Clone Wars was technically the first post-Disney acquisition material added to canon, the new book, A New Dawn, is the first brand new material added to the new shared universe (to be reviewed as soon as I finish it), prior to the release of Star Wars: Rebels in just a few weeks.

Outside of animated series and books, Lucasfilm is also working on multiple live action spinoff films.  The first two spinoff films will be directed by Josh Trank and Gareth Edwards and will likely be about Han Solo and Boba Fett.

Star Wars provides not only a universe of material, but a universe of potential genres (as shown by the directors chosen so far).  Now another spinoff film is rumored, this one about Obi-Wan Kenobi.

An Obi-Wan Kenobi movie makes sense for a lot of reasons.  Not only is there still an untold story with Obi-Wan Kenobi, but Ewan McGregor, a Star Wars fan himself, has voiced his willingness to return to the franchise.

Obi-Wan was definitely one of the better parts of the prequel trilogy, and his story was only improved through The Clone Wars animated series, but the transition to the Obi-Wan we meet in Episode IV of the original trilogy is not fully realized by the end of the prequel trilogy.

A story that takes place in that timeframe offers a unique unique story such as that of a lone samurai, or ronan (a samurai without a master) as we haven't yet seen explored in the Star Wars universe.  There is also an opportunity to stop in on a young Luke Skywalker, along with an opportunity for Joel Edgarton (who played Uncle Owen in Episodes II and III) to make an appearance.

Obviously Obi-Wan kept a low profile during this time and had no encounters with Vader or Emperor Palpatine, but that is a large chunk of where the appeal here lies.  The story that an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie would require would be a very intimate story that doesn't rehash the same big lightsaber fights and space battles we've seen in both the prequel trilogy and the original trilogy.

The Obi-Wan we see at the end of Episode III is still relatively young and energetic and appears to be on good terms with Owen Lars, but before we even see him again in Episode IV, he's referred to skeptically as a"crazy old wizard."  A movie that explores his falling out with Owen Lars, why the Sandpeople are scared of him, and how he learned to become a force ghost would be interesting.

There's also an entierly different movie where he goes undercover off Tatooine, possible reunites with Asoka Tano, and fights the inquisitors like we'll see in Star Wars: Rebels, and establishes a stronger relationship with Bail Organa (such as Leia's recording mentions).

There's a lot of different styles and stories that could be explored here, especially with Ewan McGregor looking to return.  StarWars.com recently had a massive contest where Obi-Wan Kenobi came out as the most popular Star Wars character, so it's a movie that could have some mass appeal as well.

What do you think?  What Star Wars spinoffs would you like to see instead of or in addition to an Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff?
