Star Wars: Episode VII, X-Wing Revealed!

I was disappointed to learn that Star Wars Episode VII wouldn't be present at Comic-Con this year, despite enough completed footage to put together a teaser, but that doesn't mean we aren't getting some Star Wars teases.

A couple months ago, J.J. Abrams released an on set video announcing the Star Wars: Force For Change campaign with UNICEF, offering fans the opportunity to win various prizes (including a walk-on part in Episode VII).  Since then, there has been very little news, outside of the occasional casting announcement.

The biggest bit of news since then was the the leaked images of the Millenium Falcon being built at Pinewood Studios, which also included an image of a partially completed X-Wing.  Most of the leaks for this movie have been exceptionally exciting, since they show a much more gritty Star Wars with practical effects, harking back to the Star Wars Original Trilogy.

Well, J.J. Abrams has released another Force For Change video with more Star Wars teases, this time, showing what appears to be an X-Wing.  The look is amazing.  I can't think of a better word to describe it than scuzzy.  It's worn and weathered and it looks beautiful.  We also see a Rebel (republic?) pilot in the classic orange jumpsuit.  There's also a mouse droid roving around at his feet.

This is super exciting, because it adds even more evidence to the respectful return to the Star Wars everyone loves.  Obviously, we have no idea how much of the movie will occur in post shooting CGI, but we've seen evidence of replica actual size ships, actual robotic droids, costumed aliens, and on-site shooting.

One thing of note, this X-Wing is slightly different from the X-Wings of old.  This movie does take place 30 years later, but the wings appear to be a slimmer design, and the quad engines have been swapped out for two larger engines.  It looks more like a fixed wing Z-95 Headhunter, except for the quad cannons on the wings.  Also, looking at the unfinished set photo, the S-foils are more evident, except they appear to interlock instead of stacked.

It looks like, just like Star Wars Rebels, Episode VII is taking its design queues from the late Ralph McQuarrie, which is the best thing possible.  The X-Wings in Ralph's concept drawings had a very similar engine style, although the wings still stacked.  This new X-Wing is definitely inspired but McQuarrie, but is updated and a little sleeker looking.

So it's cool to see a new and updated look, yet the sheen is removed for a much more dull and weathered look Star Wars fans wanted from the prequels.  Knowing a teaser could drop any day is exciting, although they may hold it out for a reveal until Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1st, which is about just under 8 months before release.

Either way, I've loved everything I've seen from this movie and don't mind J.J. Abrams working with the slow burn marketing if it means I enjoy the finished product that much more spoiler free.
