Gareth Edwards Joins the Star Wars Family!

With the franchise explosion set to go off in 2015 and 2016, expect the news to start exploding every other day.  We finally got a Star Wars Episode VII casting announcement after over a year of speculation, and now the director of the first Star Wars spin-off movie has been officially announced.

Gareth Edwards--the guy that brought us the new Godzilla--will direct what will likely be either a Han Solo or Boba Fett movie (or both?).  This is a great pick.  The choice of JJ Abrams for Episode VII and now Gareth Edwards for this spin-off shows the emphasis on practical effects over CGI spectacle.

The patient story telling of Gareth can definitely recapture the magic of the original trilogy (I'm sure JJ will also accomplish this).  The patient story telling we see in Godzilla is exactly the type of restraint a franchise like Star Wars needs as it recovers from the prequels.  Lets just hope he can deliver deeper characters than he did in Godzilla!

That wasn't the only announcement, though.  The screenplay is written by Gary Whitta.  This news is not quite so exciting.  Gary Whitta wrote the screenplay for movies like After Earth and Book of Eli.  It's been rumored in the past that Lawrance Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are overseeing the spin-off films and I have much more faith in their writing.  Hopefully we see more Empire Strikes Back (Kasdan) and X-Men: First Class (Kinberg) than we do After Earth.

The third piece of news as that this movie will be released in December of 2016, confirming Disney's intention to release one new film every year.  Production for this movie will likely overlap with at least one other Star Wars movie, so expect 24/7 Star Wars news starting in the next few months as production ramps up.
